Overview

This workshop provides an overview of the public relations profession: what PR people do and how public relations sits alongside other communications functions.  Delegates will be introduced to the basic skills required in public relations: writing press releases, dealing with the media, and planning campaigns.

Level

This workshop is designed for trainee account executives, in-house practitioners and admin staff who wish to build the foundation for a career in public relations, or to contribute more to the PR function they support.  The style is participative and related to delegates’ context through examples and exercises.

  • Defining PR and understanding what it offers the modern organisation
  • The special role of public relations in the marketing and communications mix
  • Different public relations sectors and specialisms
  • Writing press releases and other media material
  • In-house versus consultancy PR: comparisons, contrasts and working together
  • Dealing with the media and understanding what journalists need
  • An introduction to planning, making the most effective use of PR skills

Outcomes

Delegates operating in an administrative role who complete this course will be able to provide enhanced support to their public relations colleagues.  Potential practitioners will find that this course provides a solid foundation for a move into an executive role, either in a consultancy or in-house environment.
